OWNER / HEAD COACH
From a young age, Gina was captivated by horses, beginning her riding journey at eight in Qualicum Beach under the guidance of an English instructor. Her passion led her from early lessons at Hobby Horse Stables to her first competition in 1987. Relentlessly pursuing her dream, she became known as the local ‘barn rat,’ seizing every opportunity to ride and learn.
Her commitment eventually persuaded her parents to support her in owning a horse. Her journey continued across various stables, including Bar 6 R and Holly Groves Stables, cementing her dedication to equestrianism. Working for Libby Naylor’s dressage barn, Gina transitioned from a keen learner to a professional, mentoring young riders and starting young horses.
After high school, Gina expanded her horizons in the USA, experiencing international equestrian sport. By 1994, with the support of the Crossley family, she launched her own business. She remained an avid competitor, engaged in continuous learning through clinics, and ventured into breeding after obtaining her insemination certification from Olds College.
In 1997, Gina established Flying Changes Riding School on her purchased farm, dedicating herself to promoting equestrian sports, mentoring new riders from basic levels to 1.2m jumpers, and producing top-quality horses. Today, she, along with her family, continues to lead summer camps and develop top riders and horsemen at the farm.
HORSE TRAINER / INSTRUCTOR
Teresa Duerden has been an integral part of the Flying Changes program since 2006, starting as a young enthusiast and evolving into a prominent figure within the equestrian industry. Her journey has seen her compete across Vancouver Island and British Columbia, reaching heights up to the 1.30m jumpers. Teresa’s experience spans a wide range of mounts, from unstarted horses and ponies to high-caliber prospects, showcasing her versatility and skill in bringing out the best in green horses within both hunter and jumper disciplines.
Her dedication to the show ring is matched by her ability to enhance a horse’s performance and confidence. Teresa is particularly adept with horses facing challenges under saddle, including those with temperament issues, thoroughbreds requiring a fresh start, or young horses beginning their jumping careers.
Her skills have been honed under the guidance of top trainers, including George Morris, Brent Balisky, and Bill Ulmer, enriching her knowledge and technique in the sport.
